Golfing sensation: Emma Morrison

Young Golfer Emma Morrison

New golfing sensation,13 year old Emma Morrison, talks to Fusion about life on the golf course and how she is handling life in the limelight.

Emma Morrison is anything but your average teenager. The promising young golfer from Edinburgh, is taking golf courses by storm and has already won over five golfing titles. With both an exceptional talent and passion for the sport, Emma is raising the bar for young female golfers in Scotland.

The young golfer has been honing her talent since the tender age of seven, becoming a member of Midlothian Girls Golf Association. ‘I noticed from an early age that she had a very natural golf swing,’ recalls Dad Ricky – who is also an avid golfer. ‘It was a family friend who suggested she join Midlothian Girls and she’s been obsessed ever since.’

In the five years she has spent golfing, Emma has won six competition titles across the UK including the Midlothian Girls 12-hole competition. Playing with a handicap of 36 at the age of 10 illustates how much of an inspiration Emma is becoming to other young golfers. The exclusive members-only Craigmillar Park Golf Club, even lowered their members entrance age in order to allow for her to become a member. ‘I asked about getting a membership for her at Craigmillar Park but was told she had to be ten,’ explains Ricky, ‘They wanted to review the joining age as it was felt they had to do something to encourage young golfers, especially girls, to take up the game. They called me a few weeks later to say that they had decided to lower the joining age to eight so that Emma could join’.

Although she enjoys playing the sport and competing with others, Emma says the best part of her golfing life is the social side of it; ‘I’ve met so many new friends since I started golfing. We get to go around Scotland playing all different courses and it’s really fun.’ Just because Emma is so focused on pursuing a career in the golf industry doesn’t mean she’s missing out on more conventional hobbies; ‘We barely get a night off playing taxi to her’ laughs Ricky, ‘She does everything from gymnastics to guitar lessons’.

When watching Emma golf, it’s incredibly easy to forget her age. She can hit a ball with so much force and yet with such precision that it is obvious she has a talent beyond her years. During the summer holidays, Emma broke a 100 for the first time when competing in a medal competition and has since shot an impressive 93 around Glencorse Golf Club. No stranger to the opportunist nature of teenage girls, Emma knows how to get the most out of her golfing achievements and even managed to strike a deal with her Dad which allowed her to get her ears pierced (against her Mother’s wishes!) on the condition that she would win a medal competition last summer.

In true teenage ‘told-you-so’ style, she beat off the competition by a mile and her Dad reluctantly had to honour the bet! Now that’s what I call a girl who knows what she wants!
